Capt. Mike HOGAN - Hogy Lures
Captain Mike Hogan, owner of Hogy Lures, started pouring his own “rubber worms” as a young boy from a home kit his mom gave him. He fished every chance he got and spent summers working on deep sea fishing boats out of Cape Cod. He earned his captain's license when he was 18 and began running his own charters thereafter.
His inshore Orvis-sponsored charters were light tackle and fly-fishing, he also ran offshore charters for stripers, tuna, and marlin. In 2006, while guiding for striped bass, Captain Mike “Hogy” got back into lure making. He wanted a large-style soft bait that mimicked eels and other large baits and one that could easily be rigged and re-rigged on the water.
Originally, his hand-poured soft plastic baits were for his own use and that of his close friends but Hogy Soft-baits quickly became the next "hot" thing. Today the motto at Hogy Lures is “Fish Big” as they make large soft baits ranging from 6” all the way up to a whopping 18”! The idea behind such large baits is that large predators will expend the energy for such a large reward. In just three years, the popularity of Hogy Lures has run up and down the east coast, boasting trophy sized catches of tuna, marlin, grouper, snapper, tarpon, snook, redfish, and many others.

Chris MEGAN - On The Water Magazine
Chris Megan is a year-round resident of Falmouth, MA and a life long angler who enjoys both fresh and saltwater fishing. In his early years, Chris cut his teeth with freshwater fishing before he accepted a position with Falmouth Publishing Co. in 1992 and relocated his young family to Cape Cod. That same year, Chris purchased his first boat, a 20-foot Shamrock, and he made it his goal to learn every boulder and cove that holds fish along the Elizabeth Islands from Woods Hole to Cuttyhunk.
With his fourth child under the age of five arriving in 1993, nighttime became one of the only times Chris could get out to fish and this proved very productive! There is no place in the world more special than drifting a dropping tide under the cover of darkness while casting live eels in among the rocks that protect the Elizabeth Islands.
Over the years, Chris has fished from Canada to Costa Rica, but it was his time spent fishing along the Elizabeth Islands that was a great inspiration for him and Bill Hough to start On The Water magazine in May of 1996.
Bob POPOVICS
Born and raised in New Jersey, Bob Popovics “Popfleyes” has been saltwater fly-fishing around the globe for close to 40 years. A member, former president and executive board member of the Saltwater Flyrodders of America, chapter #1 in Seaside Park, NJ, Bob helped pioneer modern day saltwater fly fishing in the northeast through his ground breaking fly tying concepts and teaching of the sport to anyone who was interested in learning. The originator of epoxy and silicone flies, Bob’s realistic “baitfish like” designs have come to be widely known as Popfleyes. From his early introduction of the Surf Candy design in the late 1970’s to such sport standards and recent collaborations as the hollow fleye, siliclone, pop-lip, ultra shrimp, bucktail deceiver, Bob’s Banger, 3-D, cotton candy, and shady lady squid, Bob’s impacted on fly tyers and fly fishers across the globe has been expediential. Lefty Kreh has called Bob “The most innovative fly tyer I have ever met!”
Currently, Bob sits on the advisory staff of many of the industry’s top manufacturers such as St Croix Rod, Tibor Reels, and Renzetti. He is a contributing writer to Fly Fishing in Saltwaters Magazine, and his co-authored book, “POP FLEYES” with Ed Jaworowski is a staple read for anyone interested in saltwater fly fishing. He is referred to by many as one of the greatest ambassadors of our sport, and will always humbly pass accolades on to his mentors and fore fathers of the sport of saltwater fly fishing.
Bob owns and operates the Shady Rest Restaurant with his wife Alexis in Bayville, NJ and still resides just a short walk to the beach from his house in Seaside Park, NJ.
